Melbourne for Twin Celebrations and DUMPLINGS

by liz on April 18, 2011

Melbourne for me is my idea of food heaven in Australia.  You can eat, its cheap, its open till late and there is choice.

On arrival to Melbourne I got to meet Suesue, my new favourite person to eat dumplings with or as she calls them “jiaozi”  Which means the long ones that are yellow in the picture below.  I arrived with the ambition to eat dumplings every day.  I almost succeeded, the last day just got away, it was a good excuse as Suesue and Paul were getting married.

We ate at the  Oriental Teahouse which is on Chapel Street.  I have to say they did the best “bou zi”  which is the bejing soup dumpling.  The best in Melbourne.  I managed to find a few places I remember from previous times and tried new ones.

Oriental Teahouse - 455 Chapel Street South Yarra (best soup dumpling!, not to sure about pink dumplings though)

HuTong Dumpling Bar - 14-16 Market Lane (little expensive, spinach ones were great, the others hmmm)

Shanghai Village Dumpling - 112 Little Bourke St (just like i remember it, i prefer the fried ones here.  They did go up in price a whole 50cents over the last 5 years.  Still good though)

I also got to show Roy around town on the Saturday.  Off to the Vic markets for a look see, I don’t think i have seen him giggle so much.  The delicatessen’s are pretty mind numbing with so many options and meat goodies hanging everywhere.  Afterward we wandered off to Lygon Street for some pasta.  We did find a great delicatessen that had Jamon from Spain @ $99.99 kilo.  3 slices only costs $5.  However when you put it in your mouth it just dissolves.  After eating this fine specimen of jamon you only crave more as it produces an instant reaction to making your mouth water.  I think I want to go live in Spain now.

The two big celebrations we got to celebrate, were the main reason we flew to Melbourne.  Our very talented photographer friend Gemma had her first book launch for the work she had been doing with Gatehouse in Saint Kilda.  The project was called Red Light I Dark Room, which is  based on street sex workers and drug users.   Gemma was there to teach them photography and get an inside glimpse in to a world that most of us just don’t know about.  The sales of the book are going to Gatehouse, get it online TODAY!

Paul our flatmate from Forbes got married to the lovely Suesue.  Just a few photos.

Had a great weekend in Melbourne, catching up with friends, drinking beers  and eating too much.  See you all soon we have another wedding in 3 weeks!
