Brisbane French Food Festival 2012

Ok, stop drooling! Yes, pain au chocolat. I knew this would grab your attention.

The Brisbane French Festival has grown in popularity, since I last visited in 2010. Each year on the 14th July Bastille Day is celebrated by the French. Today I made the trip to Southbank in the heart of Brisbane to eat baguettes with butter. Like many, I am not the only one fond of French cuisine.

One of my favourite stores at the Noosa Farmers Market is French Sin, a colourful caravan equipped to serve cheeses, rillettes, confits, pastries and today baguettes and crepes. With a line that stretched across the walkway, the wait to get hold of the best pain au chocolat was very necessary.

BFF sandwiches tempted us with thick slices of brie, shaved ham, lettuce and of course butter. The baguettes are hand-crafted by French bakers here in Brisbane – La Bon Choix. The crispy crust and moist insides make their baguettes something real special.

‘Ricard’ (above) a French alcoholic drink, a spirit that tastes of aniseed. Mixed with water served over ice, grenadine or lime cordial are optional flavour enhancers. A refreshing drink, that quenches your thirst on a humid day.

Another thing that caught my eye were small terracotta pots full of creme brulee and quiches walking by me. Once I found the stall selling these treats, I was given a choice of lavender, rose or vanilla brulee. A tough choice, lavender is something that I have never really tasted in cooking.

Southbank was busy with many people wearing the national colours of blue, red and white, the lady below wearing a beret with a striped shirt sketches the skyline of the city.

So French.

  1. All 4 of my grandparents were French so peasant fare was the norm at our house. Since moving to Australia my cooking has changed dramatically. 🙂
