Designing my garden each season was something I took a lot of time over until recently. After the transition from the farm to a suburban block with only two raised veggie beds, it seems I am no longer growing veggies for other people or growing enough to fill my cupboards. Let me tell you a little more about my new haphazard gardening style apart of this months Garden Share Collective.
First of all let me give you a little background about farm planting. I had nice neat swales which hugged the hill side which faced north. Each row was planted out with a particular vegetable the rows were complementing for each plant. In summer I would plant the the cucabits – zucchini, pumpkin, cucumbers on the bottom row then I would plant the tomatoes which would then shade the leafy greens behind them like, silverbeet, kale, lettuce and other delicate greens. I would often scatter my rows through out the garden never making one clump of the same vegetable in an area as I found that it was more prone to pests and disease. I use to have four kale rows which were spread out into different parts of the garden and I would find that they were more resilient at times to the bugs.
However gone are the days of nice neat rows and plenty of space to plan and plot. Now I have two raised beds and I have planted it out for summer growing. Foods that I love and of course plenty of herbs. With a lack of space, I scatter plenty of seed in and just crossed my fingers in hopes to see what comes up. Plenty did. I have a mixture of herbs, kale, silverbeet, corn, leafy greens and a rouge eggplant which is absolutely covered in eggplants in one of the beds. The other is a little more out of control with cucumbers, zucchini and a pumpkin (I know) at one end with a few tomatoes which along the west to create shade for the beetroots and carrots I have planted. Dotted through out the mess are a few okra plant and on the southern climbing lattice is a mixture of green and purple beans and a few snowpeas for good luck.
I love variety in the garden and on my table. So far this haphazard method is still working for me. I am sure at some point I am going to have to think the garden a little when the rainy season hits so the veggies wont start rotting or catch disease. Until then I will enjoy the abundance of what the garden is providing me.
We are harvesting plenty of herbs and leafy greens and it look like soon I will have zucchinis, tomatoes, beans and loads of eggplants. I love these veggies and I am really looking forward to eating zucchini again, I haven’t had one since we left the farm which was over 4 months ago now.
For all my Garden Share Collective members and followers I have decided to take a much needed break away from my computer and blog. At this moment I am unsure if I will return but who knows things change quickly in my world. Kyrsite and Kate will both keep it going while I am enjoying some family time and nurturing myself. I am 12 weeks pregnant and my body is just screaming for me to stop. Pregnancy is a funny thing and after the last time the most important thing I can do is obey my body. Which means I need to slow down, relax my mind and body and just enjoy the simple things again.
So for now this is a short goodbye and I hope to be back again soon.
