Here we are with another round-up of keen gardeners sharing their vegetable patches to inspire more people to grow their own food. May is here and winter is on our door step, already. The past month has been hectic as well as a little sad as we have big changes ahead. We are moving to Northern NSW and I am going to have to leave my large veggie garden behind. I still have until June here so I am going to make the most of it while I can and harvest, harvest, harvest.
This past week we have another lot of rain pushing our tally up again for the month of April. However I was skeptical two weeks ago and had watered like mad. I want everything to grow fast now that we are leaving. I want to get as much out of the garden before the next people move in.
Mind you last week we planted out some potatoes and garlic apart of the workshop we were running. I now have an excuse to come back and check on the tenants along with raid the garden in six to seven months time.
The weather has been really pleasant of late and as the nights have gotten cooler I was expecting to see my cucuabits start to shrivel a little. Turns out I am going through a bumper harvest of button squash and about to start zucchini collecting.
As always I have a little shadow who follows me around in the garden, her name is Isla and well she loves being outdoors and her new favourite thing to do is pick chillies. Still hasn’t figured out that she should not eat them though.
HARVESTING: Buttonsquash, kale, silverbeet, basil, beans, sugar-snap peas, potatoes, beetroot, radish and chillies. A few sweet peppers and I am yet to check the pumpkin vine.
PLANTING: This month I will plant our a few asian greens and anything else I can think of that grows quick and fruits in less than 8 weeks – Any ideas?
TO DO: Shed some more tears about how great my soil is finally looking and that I will have to leave it for a while. Mulch my fruit trees, fertilize the fruit trees, harvest the turmeric, pull out the luffa vine, check for pumpkins and finish the herb garden near the livable shed for new renters – cause everyone should be growing herbs.
My tomatoes are finally coming along and fruit fly is gone so my 50+ plants are doing really well – Come on tomatoes I want plenty before I leave. I want to make sauce, passata, relish. grow, grow, grow.
Look forward to seeing what is happening out there.
