What do you know of our food systems in Australia?

After operating a market garden for a few years I realised that I needed to educate the people around me to buy local and support farmers before they would even think about stopping to pick up some fresh veggies. I bet you didn’t know that that farmers receive only 10 cents of every dollar’s worth of food they produce.

Fair Food is an inspiring revolutionary book about the change happening here and now in Australia. Edited by Dr Nick Rose, this is the first book ever written about Australia’s fair food movement and tells the transformative stories of Australia’s food pioneers and change-makers.   1. I’m passionate about supporting local farmers and producers. I think it’s imperative that we understand where our food comes from, who grows it and works their arses off for it and that they earn the money that they so rightly deserve. Supporting Aussie farmers is also crucial to reducing food miles and developing an understanding of seasonal produce. I’d be so interested to read this book as it truly is something that I am so passionate about.

  2. I’m passionate about Australian farming because if done well, it can secure our food into the future, and reverse some of the damage that has been done to our planet. I feel it is extra important to support local farmers, to keep food on your table. This book looks great, I’d read it, then pass it on to my conventional farming in-laws 😉

  3. This is a book I would definitely be interested in reading. Over the last few months I have become more conscious of where and how my food is grown. I’ve made the decision to (as much as possible) buy only products that are grown and/or produced in Australia.

  4. Generational farming is a dying art in Australia , we really need to keep our younger generation on the land , the plight of Steve Marsh has been an interesting fight , Monsanto have slot to answer for .

  5. We (our little family) are passionate about supporting our local farmers and producers, without them we will lose the beauty they create. Local farmers are the soul of our food chain and it is sad that we have allowed them to be paid pittance. A framer works bloody hard to give consumers a great quality product but unfortunately not willing to pay it’s worth. I explain to my little ones the importance of our local farmers and why we get our fruit and veggies from around our area as must as possible. Near our place we are part of a “food swap” that helps locals exchange produce what they grow in exchange for other goodies they may not. We create jams, chutneys, breads and of course fresh fruit and veggies, all from our local farmers and growers. We would love a copy of this book in our home.

  6. Although I would love to win a copy, I am happy to buy one and support the authors. These are stories that HAVE to be told… forgetting processed food, because that is a whole different story. People have no idea where there food is from, how long it takes to get there and the lack of nutritional value by the time they eat it. Add into the mix GM and Monsanto sprayed crops and you need to ask yourself- is it doing more harm than good? I guess we wont the full affects for a few more years, although.. I personally believe that we are starting to see them now. I love farmers markets and will happily (and prefer) to buy from the producers themselves… visiting their farm or road side stalls is even better. Awesome post Lizzie- a lot of people don’t know these sorts of stories- people need more of an opportunity to be responsible for their choices and that starts with knowledge. Knowledge is power! xo
