I am loving living in Mullumbimby. There is so much good food to eat and all less than five minutes from our house. There is a wide selection of cuisines to choose from and we are working our way through every eatery in town.
The food culture around this area is very sophisticated and I have found my passion again for fine foods. Locals all love supporting farmers and sourcing direct where they can. Businesses stay authentic to their cuisine and serve up fresh meals. I am in foodie heaven and I haven’t even started exploring the greater Byron Bay Shire yet.

Mullumbimby Food Top 5
Izakaya Yu
When you walk into any Izakaya in Japan you expect to be greeted immediately by all the staff. It is an experience that blows you away the first time it happens. I really did not expect it to happen in Mullumbimby. The thing I love about an Izakaya is sitting at the bar watching the chefs go about their work. The Japanese have their own pace going on and how they move fluently intrigues me. Both day and night the meals at Izakaya Yu are delicious. Personal favourites are the Agedashi Tofu and the Deep-Fried Eggplant with sweet miso sauce. The lunch set menus are a really good value too. They also sell some amazing looking sushi in the display cabinet at the front desk. So get yourself an Asahi and sit at the bar and forget about where you are.

Nomadic Kitchen
Not one week goes by that I don’t eat breakfast at the Nomadic Kitchen at the Mullumbimby Farmers Markets. Robert cooks up seasonal locally produced meals and over the past few weeks he has served up eggs in different ways along with veggies. My favourite is still the pumpkin and potato garlic goodness with a fried egg served with some delicious sourdough. I love that the menu here changes throughout the year but one thing for certain is that everything is delicious. They also have plenty of sweet treats in the cabinet and I recently sampled the most delicious almond cake with strawberries.
Rock and Roll Coffee Company
The Rock and Roll Cafe, as it is called by the locals, offers up breakfast, amazing coffee and dinner that is worth mentioning to your friends. The menu is Thai inspired and the meals served up are equally flavourful. I can’t go pass the caramelized sticky pork or for a quick lunch fix a bowl of noodles. The place is usually humming with locals and makes for a great place to sit and just hang out and absorb what Mullumbimby has to offer.

Scratch Patisserie
Our first morning after moving here, we went to explore town but we didn’t make it very far. Out our back door less than 100m away is Scratch Patisserie. My mouth dropped when I walked by, I stopped suddenly. For those of you who have ever eaten a real croissant like the ones they hand craft in France, then you need to add Scratch Patisserie to your to do list now. I ordered a plain croissant from the gorgeous display window for my first experience, for me it is the breaking point of a good bakery. I had lucked out. I had just moved 300km away from the farm to live in town and across the road was this place. Boy am I lucky. They make some wonderful sourdough breads, great coffee, sweets that just tease me every time I am there and I have had only one profiterole, so far. I am doing well.

The Middle Pub
If it is for knock of drinks or a decent feed the middle pub is a the perfect pick. You can drink a beer in the main bar or head upstairs and sit on the veranda and watch the world go by. They have a great range of pub meals and a $15 meal menu which has over 30 choices. There is plenty of seating and you won’t be waiting long for your food. For us it is great spot to take friends and family visiting or a Friday night meal to end the week. The Middle Pub also has loads of live music playing if you need to get your feet tapping.

Great tip as we will be in your neck of the woods for a few days in July. I might come back to you for some more tips.
