5 Basics for natural chicken care

Keeping your chickens healthy is really important, we do this by offering different natural remedies to keep them happy all year round. We have been keeping chickens for years now and I have never had to use harsh chemicals. Chickens are genetically tough; they don’t show signs of illness until they are just about dead. By showing signs of weakness they are more likely to be attacked by a predator and moved down the pecking line. One of the key things is to observe your chickens daily, look at their poo, check the pecking order, find the dust bath and are the feathers shiny.

You need to provide your chickens with clean fresh water, good quality feed which is not stale, dry shelter for day and a secure place at night along with a safe area for free ranging. That will keep your chickens happy. To boost their immune systems and keep them healthy here are a few items you can find in your home to add to your chickens life.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR is a great way to keep their drinking water clean from algae. It also promotes digestion and helps to absorb calcium. (Calcium is great for egg shells). Use: 1 tbsp per 4 liters of water make sure the vinegar is natural and has a ‘mother in the jar’.

GARLIC works as an immune system booster, when your chooks are sick. It also works as natural wormer, repels fleas, mites and lice.  Use: finely mashed garlic can be add to their feed or a whole crushed garlic clove can be added to their water monthly.

GRIT adds calcium to your hens diet which aids in producing harder egg shells. You can make your own grit by collecting your egg shells, dry them and then crush them into small pieces. Use: add them to the feed or in a separate container.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH is natural silica which can be fed or applied to your chickens.  Your chickens will be stronger, free of parasites, reduces flies, have more meat and improved egg laying.  Use: Apply a powder to your chicken coop to kill pests and lice and on to roosts as needed. You can also use the powder to dust bath your chickens or you can add a little to their daily feed. Buy Australian

NATURAL WORMER can be used twice a year – I worm my girls before spring and then the end of summer. Additionally you can add pumpkin seeds, nasturtiums and fresh garlic to their feed. Get a natural wormer recipe courtesy of Lisa @ Fresh Eggs Daily.
