Time to Tend the Fruit Trees

How to Care for Your Fruit Trees

Fruit Tree Check Up & Pruning

Autumn is a great time to give your fruit trees a little love, if you haven’t done so already. Each year we go over all of our fruit trees to check their growth as most of them are new plants. Checking to see that the root-stock is not trying to take over the plant and give them a helping hand by mulching and pruning.

I just want to mention that this year the citrus is starting early and that I tend to do the same thing to all the citrus once they have finished fruiting this includes; lemons, mandarins, oranges, kumquats and pomelo’s.

Each fruit tree gets the same attention, start by checking the root-stock has not shot out any new growth. If so you need to prune it back. We then prune the tree depending on its growth and shape for easy fruit picking. We follow-up by spreading organic extra fertilizer around the base of the plant making sure not to let any touch the trunk of the tree. Lastly we mulch the tree very heavily to keep in as much moisture as we can coming into the drier months. Another thing you may want to do to your plants is check them over for bugs & critters and disease – treat them if need be.

WHY PRUNE? Pruning is great for removing dead or diseased wood and it also promotes more growth which then leads to more flowers and fruit. Pruning fruit trees to size will help with picking making it easier to collect your harvests.

As a general rule don’t cut more than a third off a plant. Always use sharp tools as the tree recovers quicker, make sure to disinfect your tools if they have removed any diseased limbs before moving on to another plant.
